Day 1
Home - Mount Isa - Camooweal
Our adventure begins with an early morning flight to Mount Isa. On arrival, enjoy lunch before hitting the road and heading west toward Camooweal. Along the way, soak in the vast outback landscapes and visit the fascinating Drovers Camp and Visitor Centre, offering a glimpse into the region's rich pastoral history. Late afternoon, arrive in Camooweal, settling into our overnight accommodation. Please note: we will be split between two properties for our stay tonight.
Day 2
Camooweal - Tennant Creek
Today our journey takes us west from Camooweal, before crossing the border into the Northern Territory. Witness the vast, open landscapes of the Barkly Tableland, looking out to the horizon which seems to stretch on forever. Enjoy lunch at the Barkly Homestead, before making our way to Tennant Creek, a town rich in gold rush history. Take time to explore the Battery Hill Gold Mining and Heritage Centre, where you'll discover the stories of the region's mining past. Later, settle in to our accommodation with time to freshen up for dinner.
Day 3
Tennant Creek - Mataranka
After breakfast, travel via Renner Springs, home to an abundance of birdlife, and then on to the famous Daly Waters Hotel for lunch. Take a well-deserved afternoon break at Mataranka for a therapeutic soak in the thermal pool. Be sure to pack your swim wear in your hand luggage today, along with thongs or similar, to walk to the Thermal Pools.
Day 4
Mataranka - Katherine
Travel from Mataranka to the stunning Katherine Gorge, located in the Nitmuluk National Park. Embark on a memorable gorge cruise through towering sandstone cliffs and tranquil waters. The approx. 400m walk each way between the two gorges has steps and uneven ground, so may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. Alternatively, you are welcome to wait at the transfer point and return with the rest of the group. After soaking in the natural beauty, enjoy lunch before heading back into Katherine. Later, cap off the day with the lively Katherine Outback Experience show, offering an authentic taste of outback life and entertainment.
Day 5
Katherine - Darwin
The Adelaide River War Cemetery is a sobering reminder of the impact World War II had on this part of Australia, and our visit today will highlight this. There are 434 military burials in total, and at the adjoining Civil Cemetery, 63 civilians are honoured, including the nine post office workers who were killed in the 19 February 1942 bombing of Darwin. Also visit the Memorial to the Missing, where 292 service personnel are remembered, who lost their lives in Timor and other northern regions.
Day 6
Darwin - Home
This morning after breakfast, enjoy a short town tour before stopping at the beautiful George Brown Botanic Gardens, where you'll have time savour morning tea at the garden café. We then make our way to Darwin Airport, where your crew will assist with your check in.
